The chatter of tourists, the smell of fresh fish, and the sight of a towering cruise ship- this is just part of the atmosphere in Prince Rupert, which is visited by thousands of tourists each year.
And it is expected to rise drastically in 2026.
The port of Prince Rupert is projecting that 65,846 passengers will visit the city of rainbows this year, while projected passenger numbers are set to increase by 135 per cent in 2026.
The cruise port has been working to expand its operations, which attracted two new cruise lines to make regular stops in Prince Rupert in 2026.
Prince Rupert has many different restaurants, gift shops and activities that make it a prime destination for tourists.
In an interview with Global Ports Holdings, Cruise Port general manager Kevin D’Costa said that having such an attractive destination has helped grow the port.
“Great destinations aren’t just visited, they are experienced. By enhancing shore excursions and delivering seamless service, we create lasting impressions that drive cruise business growth.”
The growth in tourism brings a large boost to the local economy as the port saw a rise of approximately 13 per cent in revenue according to their latest financial report.
It’s not just major corporations that will be reaping the benefits from a surge in tourism. Many local businesses are anticipating an increase in customers.
Local business owners are supported by the chamber of commerce so that they can be ready for a busy cruise season, said Devika Babu, executive director of the chamber of commerce.
“Being a chamber executive, we are just here to support the business, educate them, promote them and guide them through a busy season.” said Babu.
“No matter how much work they have to put in to prepare, no business owner will be complaining about the rise in tourism,”
“We already know that the cruise season is one that people look forward to, especially the business community and the local vendors. Even the retail stores near Cow Bay or any other area in Prince Rupert.”
The city of Prince Rupert, along with its local businesses, is working hard to make Prince Rupert one of the top cruise destinations in Canada.
