Free adult literacy program coming to Prince Rupert

The B.C. Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills announced on Aug. 5 that it is extending its adult literacy programs to more communities, including Prince Rupert.

The Change Makers Education Society is part of the program expansion and will be offering the Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP) starting Sept. 1.

The B.C. government invests $3.4 million every year to support this program.

The CALP will provide basic literacy to adults, families and Indigenous communities by helping people gain life skills, secure better jobs, access further education and participate more actively in their communities.

According to Statistics Canada, B.C. is one of the most educated provinces in Canada with approximately 57 per cent having completed post-secondary education.

This program supports 204 B.C. communities, increasing from 132 last year.

The B.C. government said that this program is crucial for B.C. students.

“The Community Adult Literacy Program is a key part of the province’s commitment to making post-secondary education more affordable and accessible. It also plays a vital role in developing a skilled workforce that supports and strengthens B.C.’s growing economy and positions B.C. as a leader in the new and emerging economy.”

This program will unlock new opportunities for people and help build a stronger, more resilient workforce.
