Noah Allison is a local Rupertite who lost his father Markus in September 2023 to bladder cancer. Since then, Allison has started running to cope with his father’s diagnosis, which turned into something bigger than just sneakers on the pavement.
Allison started Miles for Markus to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation’s Patient Relief Fund, an organization that helps northern patients get the care they need by supporting them financially with the cost of travel, groceries, and accommodations while away from home.
Miles for Markus was started in honour of the strength his father showed during treatment, said Allison.
“My dad went for radiation in Prince George, and that’s when he fell ill—he went into the hospital. I went up to join him and spent a couple of weeks up there. And that’s when this journey unfolded. I was on my drive home, eight hours, by myself in the truck, and I couldn’t get the thought of doing something with my running to reflect the strength that my father had given me.”
The first Miles for Markus took place in August 2023, just one month before his father’s death. Despite going through radiation treatment and the amputation of his leg, Markus could be seen cheering on runners.
This year Allison will be running to Terrace and back in seven days, which the locals and the BC Cancer Foundation are throwing their support behind.
“We are proud to partner with Noah Allison as the benefiting charity of his upcoming fundraising event, Miles for Markus. With the help of community members we hope to raise significant funds to make a direct impact on the lives of patients in northern B.C.” said the BC Cancer Foundation.
Allison will begin his run on Saturday and will return the following Friday.
Allison said the community support is greatly appreciated.
“Knowing that I’ve got the support of so many people behind me, especially the people coming out to run. I’ve got about 40 to 45 people coming out this year, and a lot of them are going to do full days. Some people are getting into running for the first time, so it’s going to hurt and they’re aware of that, but it’s for a good cause. That really inspires me and keeps me going. The support means everything.”
There will be a send-off event for the runners at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Lester Centre.
