Prince Rupert RCMP confirm a man has died after being found unconscious at the Prince Rupert Summer Carnival on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Police responded around 10:40 p.m. after an employee of the carnival was struck by ‘The Zipper’, which has many free-swinging cages.
RCMP said they were unable to save the man.
“A man was located unconscious near one of the rides. Despite efforts of Emergency Health Services, the man was later pronounced deceased.”
The incident is under investigation, and WorkSafeBC and the B.C. Coroners Service have been called in.
Meanwhile, Shooting Stars has issued a statement via social media saying the carnival will be closed and refunds will be issued.
The City of Prince Rupert said it is “deeply saddened” by this loss, and will be offering support services to those in need.
“We know that this loss is felt beyond those closest to the individual, and that many in
our community may be struggling in the aftermath. Victim Services counsellors and
support staff will be available today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Civic Centre auditorium
to provide support to anyone directly affected, including carnival employees.” said Veronika Stewart, manager of communications.
