With Prince Rupert’s Walmart out of action, the local Chamber of Commerce is working with businesses to get shoppers to spend local and improve foot traffic at the Rupert Square Mall.
With Walmart’s temporary closure, many residents have been forced to shop elsewehere, even out of town, affecting businesses such as Kaien Island Office Supplies, Home Hardware, City Furniture and Appliances and Maverick Foods.
The Prince Rupert Chamber of Commerce executive director Devika Babu said they’ve launched a new campaign to help out.
“If any businesses want to offer a discount program through this difficult time, the chamber will promote deals to the other chamber members and the community so people know what businesses they can rely on.”
While the exact reason for Walmart’s sudden closure is unclear, the company said in a statement it was in the best interest of its customers and employees.
The community of Prince Rupert needs to lean on each other, said Babu.
“If we can find a solution in the city itself, that would be ideal. If the businesses can open up their options and provide some discounts or packages, or people can come up with programs to provide to the community, and as a community we have to plan to support each other.”
