Lax Kw’alaams Band Mayor Garry Reece has been reinstated following an alleged illegal removal on Aug. 18.
The Lax Kw’alaams Band Council passed a motion on Aug. 18 to remove Reece as mayor, however, according to Lax Kw’alaams election regulations, only the complaints and appeals board can remove a member of council.
Reece was removed for alleged breach of the code of conduct but said that there was no validity to that.
“There is misinformation circulating and we want to set it straight. First, I have not stolen from the school or the band, and I have done nothing wrong or improper,” said Reece.
Council passed a resolution to revoke the motion to remove the mayor with a majority vote.
Reece raised concerns that the motion to remove him was proposed to create division.
“At the council table, there are individuals with an agenda who appear to want to sow division and create chaos. When this happens, we all lose. I am the duly elected mayor of this community. I have engaged in no impropriety, and I intend to continue to serve my community until the end of my term,” said Reece.
Reece will continue as Lax Kw’alaams mayor.
