Parents in Port Edward may be getting some child care relief after School District 52 proposed a new child care program.
The Port Edward Community School is a one-room multi-age school in the rural community of Port Edward, 16 kilometres south of Prince Rupert. School District 52 is seeking input from the communities of Port Edward and Prince Rupert to see if a child care program could be utilized.
If approved, the new program would host up to 20 children aged three to 10 and would operate on regular school days from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Operating hours could be extended if there is a need for it.
Children would be split into two age groups: three to five and five to 10, with each group having a capacity of 10.
The district needs community interest before a plan can be implemented, said district vice-principal of early learning and child care Susan Kobza.
“If there is enough interest to support operating costs, we will confirm with parents that the program will be open for child care with a start date to be determined.”
Fees for the program would be similar to other programs in the region.
Anyone interested in this program is advised to call Susan Kobza at 250-627-2108.
