The Prince Rupert Port Authority is giving back to the community by helping build an outdoor classroom and learning garden at École Roosevelt Community School.
The PRPA is promoting hands-on learning and food education by giving students the space and resources they need to grow, care for and learn about plants. This project was developed through a partnership between the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Community Investment Fund and School District 52.
The new project has added raised garden beds, planters, picnic tables, compost bins, a tool shed, and a greenhouse. These additions will allow students to grow plants in any weather, even in cold and wet months.
This project will help students develop necessary skills, said École Roosevelt teacher and project lead Erika Bader.
“Through all seasons, our goal is to embrace conventional gardening practices and emphasize Indigenous Principles of Learning as we continue to develop and grow this space. Students from Kindergarten through Grade 5 will further strengthen their understanding for native plants and build confidence by contributing to the garden’s success.”
The PRPA committed nearly half the funding for the project.
