EmergencyInfoBC said they are currently evaluating the risk of a tsunami after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred 410 kilometres off the coast of Russia.
Studies conducted between 2017 and 2019 in Prince Rupert have evaluated the potential impacts of a tsunami on the city, revealing they would likely be minimal.
Despite minimal tsunami impacts expected, residents of Prince Rupert are still being advised to stay away from shorelines and be prepared to evacuate just in case.
Officials advise residents in coastal areas to prepare a grab-and-go bag for everyone in their household, including pets.
Officials are monitoring the situation and will provide more information once it becomes available.
