Tour de North riders off-duty after successful fundraiser

The Cops for Cancer–Tour de North arrived in Prince Rupert Sept. 18, drawing the tour to a close after raising nearly $250,000.

Cyclists from the Tour de North set out to ride from Prince George to Prince Rupert in six days to raise money for childhood cancer. Riders were escorted into the city by local emergency service officers and were greeted with congratulatory messages from several community members.

The Prince Rupert Lions Club and Safeway held a barbecue by donation to help the riders’ cause as well as offering some snacks and drinks to the riders.

Following the completion of the tour, many riders shared an emotional embrace with their loved ones after a grueling 718-kilometre bike ride over six days. Despite tears being shed, the tour was very fulfilling, said tour participant and Prince Rupert native Terry Jackson.

“It’s been a rewarding experience to fundraise and be with a great group of people for a great cause. This has been a very fulfilling experience. I’m very happy with everyone that was involved and very happy to be home. As a person who lives in Prince Rupert, I’ve never been happier to see that Prince Rupert sign.”

The tour set out to raise $250,000 and raised just shy of that mark. The funds that were raised will help children fighting cancer, said the Canadian Cancer Society.

“Most of the funds go towards Camp Goodtimes. And it’s sending kids who are going through cancer treatment to camp. And it’s also their families as well. And a percentage of it goes towards cancer research, whatever is needed at the time.”
