Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond is in Alaska this week at the Southeast Conference (SEC) to advocate for the reopening of the Alaska Marine Highway.
The Alaska Marine Highway has been closed for more than five years due to security issues with U.S. border officers.
Reinstating the Alaska Marine Highway will help grow both the Alaskan economy and the City of Prince Rupert, said Pond.
“Resolving the security and capacity issues that need to be addressed to restore ferry service between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan is a strategic move. It will strengthen cross-border collaboration and unlock new economic opportunities for both regions.”
The city hopes its participation in the SEC will show its dedication to strengthening relationships with Alaska.
