Many North Coast and Haida communities have events planned for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation this Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 29 and 30, that are open to the community.
The Prince Rupert Friendship House is hosting a truth and reconciliation community walk on Monday, Sept. 29, in the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre Auditorium from noon to 4 p.m. This event starts by welcoming attendees to Nisga’a territory. There will be food, refreshments and a dance. The community walk begins at 1:30 p.m. going down the Cloudberry Trail.
On Tuesday, Sept. 30, there will be a community gathering at the Nisga’a Hall in Prince Rupert. This event starts at 3 p.m. and will allow members of the community to recognize the impact of residential schools and help the community heal over a shared meal. There will also be a performance by Charles Hays Secondary School Git Waas Dancers.
The Haida Heritage Centre in Skidegate is holding a joint celebration for the K̲ay Anniversary and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The event starts at 10 a.m. with the Haida Clan parade and goes until 4 p.m. There will be First Nations vendor tables, a photo booth, a concession and many prizes to be won.
The Council of the Haida Nation is inviting all Haida people and said “from our ancestors to our grandchildren—celebrate with us.”
Lax Kw’alaams has a day full of events on Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Events around the community include a community breakfast, a community walk, a candlelight vigil, a tribal dance and a potluck dinner.
