Prince Rupert Walmart announces permanent closure

Prince Rupert residents will have to drive to Terrace to shop at Walmart after the company announced the permanent closure of its Prince Rupert location.

The Prince Rupert Walmart first opened its doors in October 2012 and has been serving the community for just shy of 13 years.

What was at the time a temporary closure, beginning on July 30, was put in place to ensure the safety of customers and staff. After two months of speculation, residents were finally given clarity on the situation as Walmart Canada said this is not the outcome they wanted.

“After thoughtful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close our Prince Rupert store, effective immediately. While the store was initially closed out of concern for the safety of our associates and customers, the prolonged closure led to a larger review of the store location and operations and our long-term plans.”

Walmart said even though the store is now permanently closed, it is grateful for the community support and will work with residents to ensure they still get their prescriptions.

“We recognize the disappointment and challenges this closure brings and will be offering complimentary prescription delivery from our Terrace store. Additionally, we’ll assist with transferring patient records to another pharmacy in Prince Rupert as required.”

The Prince Rupert Walmart ended its statement by thanking the community.

“It’s been an honour to be a part of the Prince Rupert community over the years. Thank you to our loyal customers for being a part of our journey.”
