Since the last Point-in-time (PIT) homeless count, Prince Rupert has seen a decline in people “counted” as homeless.
BC Housing worked with the Homelessness Services Association of B.C. and the B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres to gather the counts for several B.C. communities.
Those included in the count consisted of individuals staying in the shelter or those who completed a survey.
The last report, from 2023, indicated 146 people in Prince Rupert were experiencing homelessness with nearly 60 per cent living unsheltered. The 2025 count showed a decrease in overall homelessness but a higher percentage of unsheltered homeless people.
Over 70 per cent of respondents said they had been homeless for more than a year with the majority saying they didn’t make enough money to retain permanent housing.
The survey identified that 52 per cent of the homeless population were men with 45 per cent women and three per cent identifying with another gender identity.
The B.C. government plans to collect the data from all the surveys and produce a full report in the winter
