Lax Kw’alaams band members will soon have an easier time finding an affordable place to live, with nearly 60 new residences by 2027.
Lax Kw’alaams plans to open 20 new rental homes in the on-reserve community later this fall. This project was led by the Lax Kw’alaams Band and managed by the Lax Kw’alaams WAAP Housing Society.
In addition to properties in Lax Kw’alaams, a housing project in Prince Rupert has just started construction of a 38-unit housing complex. This project is expected to be completed in fall 2027 and rentals will be prioritized to Lax Kw’alaams band members.
“It took a lot of work to put these plans into action,” said Lax Kw’alaams Mayor Garry Reece.
“These two projects are the result of hard work done in collaboration with the Province, through BC Housing, the Lax Kw’alaams Band, our partners and with support from our membership. We welcome the addition of new homes on reserve and look forward to continuing to work together to build more homes for our members in Prince Rupert.”
These new units will greatly benefit the community and Lax Kw’alaams band members, said North Coast–Haida Gwaii MLA Tamara Davidson.
“These new homes will make a real difference for members of the community living in Lax Kw’alaams and Prince Rupert. More people will be able to live in the place they want and have somewhere to call home for their families. I am grateful for the leadership of the housing society, Lax Kw’alaams Band and everyone involved for making these projects a reality.”
