With heavy rain in the forecast, those residing in coastal areas or near large bodies of water are being advised to be prepared for potential flooding.
The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued a flood watch for most of coastal B.C as river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.
Prince Rupert is no stranger to rainy weather, but an increase in rainfall during the fall can cause water buildup on roadways and potential flooding. With flooding a possibility, officials are offering tips and best practices for staying safe during a disaster.
One of the best ways to stay safe is to be aware of any flood risks, especially during heavy rainfall. A household emergency plan should be discussed to ensure proper evacuation and safety. Staying away from rivers and shorelines is important as heavy rain could make them unstable, risking a sudden collapse, and streams can become more rapid with more water flow. Having a grab-and-go bag in case of sudden evacuation is recommended as it will allow you to get to safety more quickly.
During heavy rainfall, pools of water may form on roadways which increase the chance of hydroplaning so drivers are advised to drive with caution. In the event of rushing water across the road drivers are advised not to drive through it as rapids have enough strength to carry away most vehicles.
