Gas prices in Prince Rupert are higher than the average for the North Coast, so the B.C. Utilities Commission is requesting more information.
According to gasbuddy.com, a site where users can report gas prices for others, the price of a litre of gas in Prince Rupert is about 10 cents more on average than several surrounding communities such as Terrace, Kitimat and Hazelton.
Prince Rupert has five gas stations that operate in the city including two Petro-Canada stations and one of Esso, Chevron and Canco stations, all of which have gas priced at $1.52 per litre.
With the discrepancy of gas prices in the Northwest the BCUC has sent an inquiry to fuel stations in Prince Rupert after receiving several complaints. The BCUC is an independent agency of the Government of British Columbia that regulates B.C.’s energy utilities and promotes the competitiveness of the market for reportable fuels.
The BCUC is requesting several pieces of information from the fuel stations such as the cost of gasoline, how gasoline prices are set in the area and why prices exceed other local stations
The BCUC will evaluate the situation and asses the need for intervention.
