Local athletes in Prince Rupert will have new gymnastics equipment to train with thanks to an investment totaling $225,000 over four separate contributions by the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
The Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association has acquired equipment such as a vaulting table, springboard and a pommel horse for the boys’ competitive program. The girls’ competitive program received bars and beam and the entire facility has received mats to support a variety of activities.
These additions will benefit the PRGA greatly, said Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association president Jackie Touchet.
“This equipment has allowed us to complete our facility and develop more programming and opportunities for community members to access recreational and competitive gymnastics. We are grateful for the longstanding support from PRPA’s Community Investment Fund that has enabled us to grow to operate one of the best gymnastics facilities in northern B.C.”
The PRGA was created as a non-profit in 2014 with the goal of expanding the sport of gymnastics in Prince Rupert. Since its inception, the PRGA has evolved into a 12,000 square-foot facility that offers classes six days a week for athletes of varying ages and skill levels. Gymnastics classes are available for athletes with disabilities, children in care and a youth team of 30 athletes who compete in competitions around the province.
The PRGA provides a great opportunity for local youth, which is why the PRPA continues to invest in them, said PRPA president and CEO Shaun Stevenson.
“The Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association has consistently demonstrated its commitment to enhancing indoor recreational activities for youth in our community. This investment helps it further expand its user base and continue its evolution as a key youth sports and recreation provider on the North Coast.”
