The Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (REEF) is making significant progress, with work expected to continue as a pipeline support module is set to arrive shortly.
When it comes to transporting oil and gas through pipes, the infrastructure that supports those pipes is crucial. When an unsupported pipe is put under high stress with lots of liquid or gas flowing through it, the risk of a pipe burst is increased. A rupture could be catastrophic as the facility carries liquefied petroleum gas—a substance that can be explosive if ignited when mixed with air.
Pipe support modules are usually made from corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel, aluminum or coated metals suitable for harsh environments.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority’s pipeline support module was made in China and weighs nearly 72 tonnes. The module was loaded onto a ship in China on Oct. 26.
