BC Hydro practicing fuel spill response with Gitga’at Nation

Residents of the Gitga’at Nation in Hartley Bay are being advised that a fuel spill response exercise will be conducted near the dock area Nov. 11.

During the exercise, residents can expect several vessels operating around the dock along with a containment boom that will be deployed on the water. Residents are advised to avoid the area to ensure public safety and maintain an effective training operation.

This exercise will help enhance emergency response capabilities and operational readiness.

In 2024 approximately 88,000 litres of fuel was spilled in B.C. which poses major environmental threats, such as harming local marine ecosystems by poisoning marine life, damaging coastal environments like marshes that are vital for many species and contaminating fish and shellfish making them unfit for human consumption.

For any questions or concerns, residents can contact Eddie Robinson at the Gitga’at First Nation by phone at 778-884-2564.
