The union representing employees of the Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal (RIPET) will begin strike action on Thursday, Nov. 27.
The terminal, known as RIPET, has the largest propane export capacity in Canada at 40,000 barrels per day and provides natural gas producers with access to global markets.
The strike action was initiated by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 523B, which represents RIPET employees. Until an agreement can be reached, AltaGas has initiated its contingency measures to ensure the terminal continues operations. An alternate workforce will be used during the negotiation process.
At this time, AltaGas said it does not expect siginifcant financial impacts. As one of few propane export terminals in Canada, it is important for RIPET to remain operational, the company said.
“RIPET plays a critical role in providing consistent egress for Canadian propane production to reach the highest-value global markets. This enables Canadian producers and aggregators to realize stronger pricing for their products, benefiting all Canadians while providing vital energy security and diversification in Asia. By AltaGas continuing to take actions to maintain ratable service during the labour disruption, the company is ensuring that Canadian-Asian trading relations continue to deepen.”
