The B.C. government is promoting clean transportation technology with the help of Prince Rupert and surrounding northern communities.
The provincial government, in partnership with Innovate BC, is investing $500,000 for three new clean technology pilot projects between Prince George and Prince Rupert. The pilot projects will demonstrate the benefits to low and zero-emission technology for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. The projects will showcase Tidewater Renewable’s renewable diesel fuel, and Empire Hydrogen’s fuel-enhancement modules.
Of the three projects, Prince Rupert is taking part in two. Prince Rupert will demonstrate low-emission vehicle technology and associated infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and, along with Smithers and Kitimat, will have hydrogen fuel enhancement modules installed by Empire Hydrogen on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
The third project will be showcased by Prince George’s public works division and will demonstrate Tidewater Renewables’ renewable diesel product in a municipal fleet vehicle.
Because of B.C.’s geographic location, modernizing transportation could bring major economic benefits, said Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon.
“B.C. is Canada’s gateway to Asia and home to a strong innovation sector, creating solutions for challenges here and globally. Through our Look West strategy, these pilots leverage northern partnerships to modernize transportation, create clean-energy solutions and build good jobs. They demonstrate B.C.’s innovation excellence and our work to be Canada’s economic engine.”
Prince Rupert is one of the fastest-growing ports in the country and is always looking for innovative ways to solve problems, said Mayor Herb Pond.
“We’re proud to have been selected by Innovate BC as a testing ground for this new technology. Prince Rupert is a leading area for industrial growth, and this project gives us the chance to explore sustainable alternatives for operating our heavy fleet vehicles. The lessons we learn here could be transferable to industrial partners and other communities throughout the northern corridor.”
Northern B.C. has been leading the way for economic growth which benefits the entire province, said MLA for North Coast-Haida Gwaii Tamara Davidson.
“As a northerner, I’m proud to see people in northern B.C. leading the way toward a cleaner, stronger future. These projects mean stronger transportation networks for all people in British Columbia and more opportunities for northern companies to grow and create good jobs in our communities.”
The initiatives are part of the province’s Look West plan, which aims to create jobs and opportunities by strengthening the workforce and building a more resilient economy.
