A recently opened lodge in the north of Haida Gwaii is helping shift the region’s tourism model toward ecotourism and cultural tourism.
Ocean House celebrated its grand opening June 1 and has since created jobs and supported local entrepreneurs. In the past, sport fishing lodges dominated Haida Gwaii’s tourism industry, flying guests and supplies in from Vancouver. Because most of the supplies did not come locally, Haida Gwaii did not see major economic benefits.
Previously a floating lodge, Ocean House has been moved to the shoreline as part of Haida Tourism’s expansion. The project supports Haida values, said HaiCo board chair Kuund Koyas Laara Yaghujaanas.
“Ocean House at Tlaga G̲áwtlaas stands as a symbol of our community’s vision for a sustainable and self-determined future. Moving away from extractive tourism and toward a model that honours Haida values and culture has been critical—not just for our environment, but for our people.”
In addition to supporting Haida culture, the Ocean House will also grow the local economy, said HaiCo CEO Leticia Hill.
“This transition reflects our commitment to sustainable economic development. Ocean House at Tlaga G̲áwtlaas now provides local employment opportunities and will contribute significantly to the economy of northern Haida Gwaii. We are proud of this evolution and deeply grateful for the partnerships that made it possible.”
