Flood Warning for North Coast

Due to warming temperatures, a flood watch is now in effect for the North Coast. The City of Prince Rupert has been monitoring the forecast and is preparing by clearing snow from roads and catch basins to reduce the risk of flooding.

We encourage residents to do the same in their neighbourhoods. If you notice a catch basin in your area that has not been cleared, please call 250-624-3000 or email the city to report it. Every effort helps prevent the accumulation of water and ice that could damage property.

Not sure where your catch basin is? Use Google Maps to help locate it if it’s buried under snow.

The freeze-thaw cycle can also increase the likelihood of water main breaks, which may affect service levels if crews are redirected to handle emergencies.

Thawing conditions may lead to ice buildup on sidewalks and roadways. Please drive with caution and adjust to changing road conditions.

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation as city crews work to manage the impacts of the weather over the coming days.” said the city.

Alert Level: Low
Issued by Environment Canada: 9:30 a.m., Dec. 27
Area: Haida Gwaii and North Coast (outer coastal areas)
