City of Prince Rupert seeking feedback on waterfront playground project

The City of Prince Rupert is seeking public input as it plans a new playground near Kwinitsa Station.

The long-awaited project will see the city and its partners begin work on the project over the next few years, with funding coming from grants. The city is hoping to get resident input on what kind of play structures should be included in the project.

While the city remains focused on critical infrastructure through the BIG Project, grant funding will allow it to develop the playground, said Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond.

“This project has been long in the making and is part of the 2030 Redesign Rupert
Vision. Infrastructure is our primary concern, however the funding for this project is enabling us to continue to provide new nice to have amenities for the community while local resources are focused elsewhere.”

Residents are invited to take part in an online survey that will be distributed through the local school district as well as through the city website until March 27.

Along with the development of a playground, the city also hopes to receive additional funding to relocate the historic Kwinitsa Station to another location within the waterfront area to expand the amenities in the area.

The city plans to add amenities such as new covered seating, a welcome plaza, interpretive signage, a public art installation and enhanced play features.
