Prince Rupert Councillor Teri Forster is advocating for support of an initiative to bring a blood plasma donor centre back to Northern B.C.
In 2015 the blood plasma donor centre in Prince George closed leaving Northern B.C. without a blood plasma donor centre. With the closest donation clinic being located in Kelowna, residents of Northern B.C. cannot easily donate blood.
Without local donations, patients in the north must rely on other communities to provide the blood and plasma needed for life-saving procedures.
Because of this, Forster wants to support “Our Blood Counts,” a group of people advocating to bring a blood plasma donor centre back to the north, she said.
“I wanted to bring a motion forward to direct [City] staff to write a letter in support of “Our Blood Counts” and their work towards getting a blood donation centre in Prince George as well as mobile capacity.”
Forster added that a mobile clinic in the community would also be beneficial.
“I think there are a lot of people in our community that if they were able to go to Prince George would donate, but a mobile clinic would be even better.”
Our Blood Counts is running a petition that can be signed virtually here.
