Haida Gwaii residents who used Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Weatheradio Canada service will have to find a new source for forecasts after the service was discontinued.
The Council of the Haida Nation said it is alerting residents that Weatheradio Canada has ended after more than 50 years of providing weather forecasts over VHF radio channels in areas with limited cell and internet service.
Environment and Climate Change Canada said the service was discontinued due to difficulties maintaining the technology and rising costs. The department added it is working on “strengthening and expanding more sustainable and viable options.”
Residents can continue to receive weather forecasts on VHF radio through Canadian Coast Guard weather channels.
