Prince Rupert Residents relish in A&W opening

A&W is officially open for business in Prince Rupert after the fast-food restaurant’s long-awaited arrival in the City of Rainbows.

The new drive-through burger joint becomes Prince Rupert’s second drive-through restaurant, joining McDonald’s.

Residents have been waiting for A&W to open and are excited to see it open, said Mayor Herb Pond.

“Residents have been patiently watching the corner of Third and McBride for signs of a Teen Burger, and the day has arrived. We are happy to see an additional dining option opening up, as well as the development of a formerly empty lot at the heart of the community.”

Before A&W officially opened at 9 a.m. on May 8, residents on social media were suggesting lining up 15 minutes prior as they expected the restaurant to be incredibly busy.

Those residents were correct in assuming A&W would be busy, especially with the added traffic from a cruise ship that arrived in the morning.

Around noon, traffic for the lunch rush backed up the drive-through line onto Third Avenue and toward Ocean Centre Mall.

The restaurant was so busy it temporarily ran out of A&W Root Beer.
