The Gitxaała Enterprises Corporation (GECO) is working to combine the Crest Hotel and Chances Casino into one of B.C.’s premier Indigenous-owned resort destinations.
In partnership with the City of Prince Rupert and the BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC), GECO is advancing plans for the spaces, which started with two land agreements with the city which included the laneway between the two buildings and a portion of the casino parking lot which was previously owned by the city.
Since acquiring Chances Casino in February 2025, Gitxaała Enterprises Corp. and the B.C. Lottery Corp. have invested a combined $2 million in property improvements. Upgrades include new slot machines and electronic tables, along with new seating and interior finishes.
The Crest Hotel has also been upgraded with a new commercial kitchen, polished concrete floors and cedar columns.
The investment will help create opportunities for Gitxaała members, said Gitxaała Enterprises Corp. board chair and elected Chief Linda Innes.
“This work reflects our responsibility as Gitxaała people to create opportunities for our Nation while remaining grounded in who we are and where we come from. The investments we are making here are about building a strong future for our people, creating opportunities for our youth, and ensuring our presence and leadership are reflected throughout our territory.”
Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond said the investment will also benefit the local economy.
“Gitxaała is breathing life into Prince Rupert through its many Indigenous-owned and operated enterprises. They invest locally. They hire locally. Profits are reinvested locally to the benefit of all. That’s worth celebrating.”
