A new chapter for Masset readers

Masset locals will be able to further their love of reading with the opening of a new library.

The new 3,870-square-foot library features a Haida Language Immersion Lab to learn and share the Haida language. The library also has a shared meeting room, fireplace lounge and a children’s area.

A celebration for the official opening was scheduled for Sept. 13 but was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

The new library is a welcome addition to the community, said Masset Mayor Sheri Disney.

“The Village of Masset has eagerly anticipated this new library, and we’re thrilled to see it come to life. The library incorporates feedback from the community, ensuring it reflects our needs and values. We are proud to be part of this investment in our future.”

The Haida Language Immersion Lab was created to preserve and revitalize the X̱aad Kíl dialect of the Haida language, which has fewer than 10 fluent speakers. People can go to the lab to learn about the Haida language and share knowledge to help preserve its culture and history.
