Keeping attractants secure the BEAR necessity in Skidegate

A bear was spotted in the community of Skidegate and residents are being advised to keep garbage, food or animal remains in a secure location to avoid attracting bears.

The Skidegate Band Council is recommending residents use bear-proof dumpsters, hang game meat securely and out of reach of bears and clean up fallen fruit as soon as possible.

If you encounter a bear, B.C. Parks advises you to stay calm and keep eyes on it while slowly backing away. Keeping bear spray on you and easily accessible is also highly encouraged.

The Skidegate Band Council said being aware will help resolve issues with wildlife.

“We always strive to work with the community and the sooner we know about problem wildlife, the more proactive and helpful we can be.”
